This weekend we celebrated Brian’s 48th birthday as well as our 12 year anniversary. With the rare luxury of a babysitter, we explored the internet in our quest for a romantic weekend away. Having visited the county of Cumbria numerous times, we decided this would be the perfect location. We wanted a relaxing weekend break, a hotel which had everything, and we certainly found one!The Cumbria Grand Hotel is part of the Strathmore Hotel Group, a chain consisting of seven hotels located throughout the north of England and Scotland. The chain is rather unique in that patrons receive additional benefits for booking direct; firstly a cheaper rate than using price comparison websites. Secondly free WiFi in the hotel room (which was greatly appreciated).
Cumbria Grand Hotel
Located in the quaint Victorian sea-side town of Grange-over-sands, the Cumbria Grand Hotel was built in the late nineteenth century. Although the hotel has been modernised, it still retains that Victorian charm. Every aspect of the hotel has been considered to provide a comfortable and relaxing stay for all guests. Visitors are able to enjoy the tranquillity of the hotel and its location thanks to the amazing staff and general welcoming vibe which the hotel exudes.
The location was what attracted me to the hotel in the first instance. Set in 20 acres of gardens and woodland, I had the perfect opportunity to stroll and enjoy the peaceful, tranquil atmosphere. The beautiful gardens are the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink in the afternoon sunshine.
Making the most of the afternoon sunshine, I enjoyed a stroll through the idyllic woodlands to the rear of the hotel. This made for a beautiful, peaceful walk.
It was during this ramble that I stumbled upon a beautiful nature reserve. The sheer amount of beautiful scenery is amazing, the hotel truly gives that much sought after countryside vibe.
A children’s play area is also located within the hotel grounds which is situated adjacent to the tennis court.
We booked a superior double room which included breakfast. The room was spacious, clean and well decorated. The bed was huge and incredibly comfortable! The room included a wardrobe, dressing table with drawers, T.V. and a table and chairs. A perfectly well equipped, clean and fresh en-suite bathroom completed the room perfectly.
One of the most memorable aspects of our stay is undoubtedly the excellent service we received. Every single member of staff we encountered, from those on reception, bar staff, waiters and cleaners were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. The staff could not have done more to make our stay more comfortable.
An evening meal from this hotel is an absolute must! We opted for dinner in the bar rather than in the restaurant. We did expect to be waiting for some time for our food, it was a Saturday night and the restaurant was extremely busy. However, to our delight, our starters arrived within 10 minutes of placing our order. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted and Brian tells me the Pâté was also exceptional.
We both opted for the cheeseburger for our main course and we were both equally impressed! The chips were just like my Grandmother used to make!
Our dinner including 2 drinks cost under £35!
We enjoyed a wide selection of foods; cereal, yogurt, fruit, and a cooked breakfast option. The breakfast was served buffet style so we could help ourselves to as much or a little as we liked. As we seated, the waiter brought a pot of tea and a pot of coffee to our table along with a generous helping of toast.
What made breakfast even more special were the views from the restaurant.
The hotel also boasts a Victorian ball room which can be booked for weddings and other functions.
The bar was well stocked with a wide variety of drinks. The area was extremely comfortable and welcoming, providing an excellent place to unwind in the evening.
Lifts made every floor accessible (something not every hotel can boast).
In summary, I would, will and already have recommended this hotel to anyone. With its charming interior and superb location overlooking Morecambe Bay, this hotel provides the ideal base for those wishing to explore the South Lakes. Alternatively, if, like us, you are looking for a relaxing weekend break away, you need not move from this luxurious hotel. It has everything – delicious food, a delightful bar and stunning views of the surrounding areas. The staff have created a welcoming atmosphere, which the walls of this beautiful Victorian hotel undoubtedly retain.
