The Key to a Great Night’s Sleep – Sleep Master Sleep Masks

As I’ve mentioned before, since childhood I have suffered from random bouts of insomnia. These horrid spontaneous sleepless nights/nights of little sleep can last for days, weeks, or even months on end. I found pregnancy acted as a trigger for long nights of insomnia! Quality sleep is essential to our overall wellbeing. I’ve found sleep masks to be hugely beneficial in my fights against insomnia. Over the past 7 nights, I’ve been trying out my new Sleep Master Sleep Mask.

But before my review of this amazing new product, let’s explore the reasons why sleep masks have become a much-loved product!

The Power of Sleep

Most of us will have trouble with sleep at some point in our lives. The NHS recommends we get around 8 hours of sleep per night. For many others like me, 8 hours is a fantastical amount of sleep! Parenting duties, work and other aspects of life often interfere with our ability to get a full 8 hours each night. Yet you might not need a full 8 hours! Some people can function on 6 hours or perhaps need even longer. Personally, I am more than happy if I get my 7 hours of quality sleep.

Sleeping is a way of recharging our bodies. Our bodies need rest. If you can’t get a proper night’s sleep, you run the risk of falling asleep during the day. This can be a mere inconvenience or potentially dangerous. Tiredness makes us irritable and affects our ability to concentrate. Long term sleep deprivation can lead to anxiety and depression.

Proper sleep is essential for those seeking to lose weight. A lack of sleep can affect the way in which the body processes carbohydrates. Furthermore, studies have shown that people with reduced sleep had a reduced level of leptin – the chemical in our bodies which makes us feel fuller for longer. Also, sleep-deprived people are more likely to binge on calorific foods to boost their energy levels. So, in a way, we can sleep ourselves thin!

The Benefits of Sleep Masks

If you’re like me, you might find it difficult to nod off. To get into that sleepy state. You’ve drunk a whole cup of camomile tea (which makes you want to run to the loo every half hour). You don’t want to go down the road of medication. You just want good old natural sleep. Well, sleep masks are there to lend a hand!

Our brains are programmed to sleep when its dark. So, if you’re trying to nod off when you’re surrounded by light, this can be problematic. Reducing natural and artificial light can be extremely difficult.

Blackout blinds are expensive and can’t travel with you if you sleep elsewhere. Yet these would be totally useless if you have artificial light in your home. For instance, my husband’s health conditions mean we have to sleep with a night light making it extremely difficult for me to get into that sleepy state. In the summer months, I am woken by the sunrise which shines right through two of my bedroom windows. The sound of the birds signing also serves as an unwelcome distraction in the early morning making it difficult for me to get back to sleep again.

Sleep masks eliminate light so you see only total darkness. This then sends a signal to the brain letting it know that dark time = sleep time.

The Sleep Master Sleep Mask

So I’ve been using the Sleep Master sleep mask for the past 7 nights, and here’s what I think:

The first thing to say about my lovely sleep mask is that it is incredibly comfortable to wear. The materials used to produce the mask are fine polyester stretch satin. The use of such materials means the mask sits comfortably on the face and doesn’t press hard on the eyes (as some of the masks I have previously used have done). The mask also fits comfortably around the nose.

The use of velcro means this is a one size fits all product. The first night, I played around with the product to make sure I got the fit perfect. I am an active sleeper – apparently, tossing and turning is my thing! The mask hasn’t fallen off once in the night!

Another amazing feature of this product is the built-in sound muffling. Now my husband has sleep apnoea which means he snores incredibly loudly throughout the night. If he gets to sleep before I do, this can result in a totally sleepless night for me. The sound muffling doesn’t completely eliminate sound (so I can still hear the kids if they shout me) but it does dim the sharp sounding snores of my husband! Plus, if he watches TV when I want to go to sleep, the noises emanating from the set are reduced to distant tones.

As recommended by the Sleep Master team, I placed the mask into a bag they provided and then left the sleep mask in the freezer throughout the day. When it was time for bed, the mask was incredibly cool and refreshing.

One of the most important features of this product is that it is actually a blackout mask! I can’t tell you just how many sleep masks I have tried which still let light into the eyes. Because the product is designed so well, the light simply can’t get in! Your brain will have all the darkness it requires to get a great night’s sleep.

Why I would Recommend the Sleep Master Sleep Mask

Having used this mask for a week now, I can say that I have noticed a great improvement in my sleep. I find it easier to reach a sleepy state when I’m wearing the mask. Also, essentially, the quality of sleep I get when using the mask is fabulous! This means I feel more energetic throughout the day. Furthermore, I don’t feel as tired when I wake in the mornings. I think this is helped by the contrast of darkness in the mask and the light I see when I take it off in the morning!

The sleep mask is also machine washable!

The mask is also aesthetically pleasing. I love the teal colour! This would make the sleep mask a perfect gift! If you’re thinking of buying flowers or chocolates for the lady/man in your life, then why not consider giving them a gift that keeps on giving? For the same price as a gift that will last but a short time, one of these sleep masks will last for years!

So, if you struggle to sleep, this product is designed for you! Whether at home or travelling, you’ll wake feeling refreshed, energised and reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep.

This is a collaborative post, however, as always, all opinions are my own.

Thank you for such a detailed review! This sounds great. Our room is very bright and we are next to a main road which can be very loud, so I’m going to give this a try.

That’s awesome, I barely get 6 hours of nice sleep and I think this might help. I never used one of these before which makes it interesting.

Hello fellow insomniac! I have a hard time getting to sleep myself. My husband ALSO has sleep apnea, and though he has a mouth guard to help control it, he still snores. And any time I want to sleep in, the sun bursting through the curtains and the stupid singing birds force me to get up before I want to. This sleep mask looks right up my alley. Maybe I can finally get some peaceful sleep!

I have never used a sleep mask before but tend to sleep in a pitched black room. Glad the sleep mask worked for you overall! Thanks for sharing!

I used to always sleep with a sleep mask and my family thought it was hilarious but I loved the fact it blocked all the light out and I used to find it easier to sleep. I lost my sleep mask when I moved house and haven’t had one but this one looks fab I love the fact that if muffles noise and putting it on after it being in the freezer all day sounds incredibly refreshing!

My mother recently was given a silk sleep mask meant to reduce wrinkles as well as promote sleep, and there is definitely something to be said for the warmth the mask brings to the face and the sense of utter darkness it provides.

I can’t sleep without an eye mask now, but I’ve never heard of this brand before! It looks so much more comfortable than mine xo
