The Benefits of Green Tea

The Benefits of Green Tea

I’ve been a lover of Green Tea for many years now. For some reason, I had strayed away from this delicious beverage for a while but now I’m back on track. Hand on heart, I have missed this drink and the serious health benefits supping it brings. I have noticed a change in my body and overall health since I restarted my tea regime. I initially started supping Green Tea as part of my weight loss programme, but I soon discovered this herbal tea has many other advantages for the body.

If you’ve never tried Green Tea before, I recommend you give it a try. Not only are there many health benefits to be gained, but it’s also a really nice hot drink. I must admit, it did take a few cups to get used to the taste, especially because I had little previous experience with herbal teas. Now I much prefer Green Tea to traditional black teas.

Weight Loss

Some studies have demonstrated that Green Tea boosts the metabolic rate and increases fat oxidation, which in turn helps you to lose weight, especially around the abdominal area. The herbal tea was also shown to increase the burning of fat during exercise.

Brain Power

Green Tea is a perfect alternative ‘pick me up’ to sugary drinks or snacks. It also boosts brain power and cognitive memory functions. Studies have also suggested that the tea may lower one’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in old age.

Good for your Heart

Studies have shown that the delightful herbal tea helps to reduce bad cholesterol, which is a major contributory factor to heart attacks and heart disease. The drink can also reduce the amount of calcium built up in the arteries. In fact, Green Tea drinkers are said to have up to a 31% less chance of developing heart disease.

May Decrease the Risk of Some Types of Cancer

Such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer. The tea contains polyphenols which scientists believe can help to eradicate cancerous cells and prevent them from growing.

Lower Risk of Infections

Catechins found in Green Tea can kill bacteria which cause viruses such as influenza. Properties in the tea can also destroy bacteria which causes throat infections. The herbal tea is also great for treating minor illnesses such as the common cold and coughs. It’s soothing properties and health benefits make it an ideal feel-good beverage for those under the weather.

May Decrease Risk of Developing Type II Diabetes

Research has shown that beverage can reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.

Improved Dental Health

Green Tea improves bad breathe. It also has other benefits for dental health – catechins found in the tea prevent plaque formation which contributes to tooth decay.

Treating Acne

Green Tea contains antioxidants, a powerful acne fighting ingredient. After drinking the tea, mix the contents of the teabag with honey and apply it to the acne affected areas of the face or body. Rinse after 20 minutes. The mixture will reduce inflammation caused by acne.

Improve Mood

The caffeine found in Green Tea improves mood and can be used as part of an anti-depressant programme. L-theanine found in the drink increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain which relaxes the body and relieves stress.

Treating Arthritis

The tea contains anti-inflammatory properties which can relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis.

Youthful Skin

Again, the anti-inflammatory properties in the herbal tea can be beneficial, this time for the skin. They can prevent damage to the skin from environmental factors and reduce wrinkles and fine lines. The tea can also reduce puffiness around the eyes and dark circles by placing Green Tea bags on the eyes.

Energy Boost

Some studies have shown that Green Tea provides an energy boost for drinkers. It also increases endurance during physical activity resulting in more weight loss and a healthier body.

Lower Blood Pressure

Green Tea can be supped to increase blood pressure (which is in turn good for the heart, as well as overall health).

Around 3-4 cups of Green Tea should be consumed to reap the full benefits listed above. I can personally vouch for a number of the above statements. I have used my favourite herbal tea to: treat acne, lose weight, boost energy, lower my blood pressure and to improve my mood during depression. This delicious tea quickly became part of my daily routine, drinking a cup in the morning, one after lunch and 2 or 3 cups in the evening. I have also discovered that I sleep better if I drink a cup before bedtime.

Green Tea is relatively inexpensive and available from a range of stores. I buy my Green Tea bags from Holland and Barrett. They contain 100% Green Tea and no artificial ingredients. Furthermore, they’re Fairtrade and only £2.99 for 80 bags. Holland and Barrett – £2.99

Various flavours have been added to Green Tea so you’re sure to find a flavour to suit your own pallet. Twinnings have an extensive selection (I can personally recommend their Green Tea and Lemon).

Awesome. Also, one added benefit to any tea is that it warms the soul, and is quite comforting in the cooler months.
