Kite Flying at Scarborough Castle

Kite Flying at Scarborough Castle

This bank holiday weekend we decided to try our hand at a spot of kite flying at the Kite Festival held at Scarborough Castle. The event was extremely well attended and ran from Saturday 26th May to Monday 28th May (we visited the castle on the Sunday). The day was warm, yet there was a strong breeze which made this not only the perfect weather for kite flying, we also had the most ideal, scenic location for flying our kites.

The Kite Flying Festival

The festival included kite flying demonstrations from kite flying experts. These spectacles were absolutely remarkable. Scarborough castle as well as the beautiful coastline provided the perfect back-drop for these colourful displays.

Kite Making

The event was also highly interactive, children were invited to make their own kites. A friendly team provided the materials and instructed the children on how to construct a kite that was guaranteed to fly. With a little help from me, of course, Aurelia stuck two sticks to a plastic diamond shaped piece of plastic.

She then chose four strips of plastic to create the tails and stuck them to the back of the kite.

String was then attached to the kite and we wrapped the other end of the string around a piece of card.

After approximately 15 minutes of a fun activity with my toddler, our wonderful kite was complete!

Kite Flying

It was then time to test out our creation and fly the kite!

As we followed all the instructions carefully, our kite successfully took to the skies. It provided hours of fun kite flying for Aurelia (and myself!).

Kite Flying with the Experts

The highlight of Aurelia’s day was undoubtedly flying one of the more sophisticated kites with the experts. Aurelia was handed a large colourful kite, told how to fly it and then we helped her take it to the skies.

As we are English Heritage members, the event cost only £1.70 for myself, Brian and Aurelia. This was worth every penny! (Admission for non-members on a family ticket was £18.60).  This was yet again another occasion in which the purchase of English Heritage membership really pays off! Scarborough Castle is wonderful for us thanks to its accessibility for disabled people (those with a blue badge can park in the castle grounds).

English Heritage are excellent at providing fun filled, memorable family days out. Be sure to follow our journeys throughout the summer as we explore the UK with English Heritage and create some amazing family memories.

As invited kitefliers at the weekend, we really enjoyed this event, supporting a great collaboration between Infinite Arts of Sunderland and English Heritage. We could have done with clear skies on Monday, although that didn’t stop us doing what we love best, kite flying and gassing! We hop e to be back again next year.
